The medium of 35mm film allows experimentation though physical manipulation. The byproduct of using film is result in the accidental creation of noise. The abundance of grain conveys a feeling of static, almost like staring at an old tube TV in which I spent a lot of my childhood doing. Grain, dust, and small scratches provide evidence of a true physical object. This authenticity conveys a sense of rawness. Film is representative of many things in life. Film is physical, and requires very careful manipulation when using it. Mistakes that are made when using 35mm film are more permanent. Touch-ups are possible through Photoshop, but if something goes wrong in the developing process, or if its shot incorrectly, the picture is lost. Forever. That risk-to-reward ratio makes film justifiably more fun for me since I develop all my film at home. I am able to determine how my film turns out, every decision I make during this process will make itself evident in the end. The additional layers of challenge allows for more creative expression and puts me in the minority of people still shooting 35 millimeter film today.
